This new FE College opened in 2011 and has quickly become the campus of choice for Greater London students with over 200 courses and an Ofsted rating ‘Good’.
Architecturally stunning it is a great place to work and play; two design awards – the March announcement that CWC had won the 2011 RIBA London Award for outstanding architecture was followed quickly in July by the New London Award celebrating the capital’s best schemes honoured under the ‘Learning Category’. Other winners included the Olympic Velodrome and Barking’s Regeneration Scheme.
The Danish architects were naturally very careful about interior decoration and the governing body approached the Cornish interpretation consultant, Annie Lucas for an holistic messaging scheme to help define dedicated teaching spaces, cafes and leisure areas. She in turn asked Tim Guy and Matt Grocutt to work on the programme and together devised a set of dynamic photographic wordmarks that work as signage (without the arrows) and help ‘decorate’ the otherwise great white wall elevations. The opening celebrations allowed for some festive exterior graphics and later in the year the team returned to help launch the first Degree Shows with giant bulldog clips ‘supporting’ the works of art and design.
