It was with great pleasure that I was once again able to present our annual student prize to a graduate of Plymouth University's 'Graphic Communication With Typography' programme. This year's winner was Thom Skinner whose typographic poster treatments really caught my eye. We awarded him £200 - which he seemed suitably pleased about. This year, as always, it proved extremely difficult to decide who should get the prize, there was after all so much good work on show. So for the first time, we awarded a £50 second prize to Shaun Jones for his humorous typographic project aimed at promoting mis-shapen fruit and vegetables. Both were very worthy winners and we wish them all the very best for the future.
From what I've seen of this year's arts degree show, there is no shortage of creative talent in the South West. The tutors and lecturers at Plymouth, Falmouth and Taunton are all doing great work in helping to shape and foster the skills that these fresh designers, artists & makers will need to make careers in the sector. Here at Toucan we are planning to tap into this rich creative vein by setting up a rolling graduate internship programme. We are delighted that recent Plymouth University graduate, Ollie Eskriett will be joining us in early July, and are looking forward to seeing what he brings to the Toucan team.
