I have recently graduated from Plymouth University with a BA (Hons) in Graphic Communication with Typography, specialising in Branding and Identity. I am a young passionate creative that enjoys experimenting, hand rendered typography and Illustration. Within design my areas of interest lie in branding, environmental graphics and typography.

Growing up in Oxfordshire and Wiltshire I found my way down to Devon a few years ago. I’m a keen cyclist and am often out on my bike exploring the Dartmoor and coastal landscape.

Art and design runs in my family so it was almost inevitable I would follow the same path, my passion for design instilled from an early age.

Many years on and with years of industry experience behind me I am a dedicated and enthusiastic designer, that takes pride in every project undertaken. I’m happiest in a studio environment where we can collaborate together to work towards an excellent final result. The great thing about design is that it is always moving forward, and as a new member of the Toucan team, I’m excited about what the future holds and the variety of work ahead.

I have been tinkering with computers and the web for almost as long as I can remember, my first website being a Dr Who fansite built on geocities (remember them!) The web is a fascinating place where something new is always happening, be it technology or design, nothing stands still, or at least if it does then for not much more than a quick cup of tea and a sit down. The things we are developing now wouldn't have been possible a few years ago which is immensely exciting.

I graduated from the University of Plymouth in 2009 with a degree in computing informatics, where in my final year I wrote a report called 'Does the mobile internet exist?' Apart from sounding incredibly pretentious I concluded that it didn't in as much as the information provided by the mobile internet is the same as the 'normal' internet just presented differently. This has led to an interest in 'responsive' design techniques and ways to present relevent, current information in a way which works no matter the device or screen.

I live on the edge of Dartmoor where I spend as much of my free time as I can. I am the musical director of Camelford Town Band as well as playing more or less any brass instrument or percussion with several bands and groups.

You can probably see that I am the most mature of all of the designers in the team but that is because I have had my own practice in Cornwall and London for over 40 years and in the last two have been working with Josh in leading brand and campus design direction at Plymouth University. We have in common the love of teaching and I am also an associate lecturer in graphic communications at the University. I have made my long-term home Cornwall and I have learnt what makes the county unique in terms of both business location and leisure.

@swirlingpit

I have been a design professional for over twenty years although my route into the industry wasn't particularly orthadox. I originally trained as a musician, having studied the trumpet at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. I had a number of other occupations – barman, carpenter, factory worker, even a removal man! – before moving to Exeter to study for a degree in Typographic Design.

After I graduated I worked in a number of creative studios before undertaking a postgraduate teaching qualification and taking up a lecturing post in Graphic Communication at Plymouth University. I also taught at The Arts Institute, Bournemouth, helping to deliver courses at both FE & HE level.

I co-founded Toucan in January 2000 and have seen the business develop and grow over the following years. Despite these changes, my ethos and approach remains the same as it was when I started: In short, I believe that intelligent and creative graphic design is a powerful and valuable business tool. What's more, I encourage our clients to engage in the design and development process as this collaborative approach delivers lasting and effective results. My particular interests lie in branding, typography and increasingly, the human interface aspects of design for digital media and UX design.

I live with my wife and two sons in a small village just outside of Exeter, and when not at work I'm kept busy by my love of road running, painting, sketching and playing the trumpet with the Exeter Symphony Orchestra.

I trained in business management and law and worked in the legal departments of Powys and Dyfed County Councils before moving to Exeter in 1992 to work within the family law departments of south west based legal practices.

As Managing Director my role is to ensure that the wider strategic vision for Toucan is maintained, whilst dealing with the day-to-day aspects of running a small but successful SME. My interests outside of work mainly revolve around my family life - I have two children and two horses.

I am involved in the administrative aspects of the business and am currently studying on a day release basis for my accountancy qualifications. I'm a detail person - some would say I'm OCD - and particularly like working with figures and numbers.

I'm orginally from Poland and hold a Masters degree in Computer Science from Wroclaw University of Technology. I've been in the UK since April 2008 and started with Toucan in October 2009. Since that time I have significantly enhanced the Toucan's digital provision, developing a bespoke and sophisticated PHP framework and 'Youcan' the accompanying content management system.
